History of New Reflections Technical Institute

New Reflections Technical Institute (NRTI) has been a cornerstone of education and opportunity in the Greater Kansas City area since its founding in 1996. Initially conceived as an entrepreneurship, business, and socialization program for youth, NRTI has grown into a comprehensive institution dedicated to addressing the needs of the community through education, skill-building, and workforce development.

Our Early Beginnings

In the mid-1990s, Mark Byrd, the founder and CEO of NRTI, recognized a pressing need within Kansas City’s underserved communities. Many individuals lacked the foundational skills and resources necessary to access stable employment opportunities. To address these challenges, Byrd launched NRTI with a focus on youth development, offering programs designed to instill entrepreneurship and social responsibility.

The institute’s commitment to excellence was apparent from the outset. By 2011, NRTI had successfully graduated 3,011 students through its GED program, helping many reclaim their educational journey and access new opportunities. These successes highlighted a broader need for programs that went beyond basic education—programs that provided specialized, in-demand skills.

Expanding Horizons: Bridging the Skills Gap

In 2015, NRTI made a pivotal shift to address the region's growing demand for skilled workers. The institute introduced vocational programs aimed at closing the workforce skills gap and preparing students for sustainable careers. These programs included CDL Class A licensing, bookkeeping and accounting, computer user support, secretarial and administrative assistance, and construction fundamentals. Each program was carefully designed to meet the needs of both students and employers, ensuring a pipeline of well-prepared graduates ready to thrive in their chosen industries.

Today, NRTI continues to adapt and expand, offering new courses like culinary arts, and emphasizing hands-on, practical training across all disciplines.

Our Mission

At the heart of NRTI’s mission is a commitment to creating a culture of excellence through productive and progressive training practices. We believe education is a powerful tool that can uplift individuals and entire communities. By equipping students with marketable skills and fostering a supportive environment, we empower them to envision and achieve a brighter future.

Leadership and Legacy

Mark Byrd’s leadership has been instrumental in NRTI’s success. A lifelong education and community development advocate, Byrd has forged partnerships with local employers, government agencies, and community organizations. These collaborations ensure that NRTI graduates gain certifications and access meaningful employment opportunities.

In addition to his work with NRTI, Byrd has spearheaded innovative initiatives like constructing tiny homes for homeless individuals and veterans. These projects, which integrate NRTI construction students in their execution, provide both practical training and a tangible impact on the community.

Programs and Partnerships

NRTI’s programs are designed to serve diverse demographics, including individuals facing systemic barriers such as incarceration, unemployment, or homelessness. The institute’s partnerships with organizations like the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), the Veterans Administration (VA), and Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) provide additional resources and support for students.

Some highlights of our offerings include:

  • CDL Licensing: Training students to become professional truck drivers.

  • Culinary Arts: Preparing students for dynamic careers in food service and restaurant management.

  • Construction Fundamentals: Providing hands-on experience in building trades, including the ongoing tiny homes project.

  • Technology Training: Offering courses in computer support and IT fundamentals.

  • Administrative Skills: Equipping students for roles in office management and bookkeeping.

Through these programs, NRTI has maintained a 98% graduation rate and an 87% job placement rate.

A Community-Driven Approach

NRTI’s approach is deeply rooted in collaboration. Programs like Pulpits to Porches partner with local churches to provide training directly within congregations, fostering a supportive and spiritually enriching environment. This initiative, along with others, reflects our belief in addressing not just economic challenges but also social and emotional well-being.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to grow, NRTI remains steadfast in its mission to provide accessible education, bridge skill gaps, and empower individuals to succeed. From our innovative programs to our focus on holistic development, we are committed to transforming lives and building a stronger, more inclusive Kansas City.
