Building Futures: NRTI’s Tiny Homes Initiative
Changing Lives, One Tiny Home at a Time
At New Reflections Technical Institute (NRTI), we believe in creating opportunities that not only educate but also empower our community to thrive. Our Tiny Homes Initiative embodies this mission by combining education, skills training, and community service to make a tangible difference in Kansas City.
A Vision for Transformation
The Tiny Homes Initiative started as a bold vision by NRTI’s founder, Mark Byrd. The goal? To train construction students while addressing critical issues like homelessness and affordable housing. Since launching, our construction program students have been working tirelessly to bring this vision to life, building tiny homes that provide stability and hope for individuals in need.
How It Works
Each tiny home is built by students enrolled in our Construction Fundamentals Program, an eight-week course that offers hands-on training. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, students gain real-world experience in:
Framing and carpentry
Electrical wiring
Plumbing
Roofing and finishing
This comprehensive approach not only equips students with marketable skills but also gives them the opportunity to contribute to a life-changing project for those without housing security.
The Impact
The Tiny Homes Initiative is more than just a construction project—it’s a lifeline. The homes are designed to offer individuals and families a safe place to rebuild their lives. Residents are provided with:
Mental health support services
Financial literacy training
Career counseling and job placement assistance
These resources create a pathway to self-sufficiency, helping residents regain stability and confidence.
By the Numbers
24 Tiny Homes planned for construction
74 Students Graduated from the Construction Fundamentals Program
98% Graduation Rate at NRTI
87% Job Placement Rate for program graduates
A Personal Story: Meet Kevin
Kevin, a graduate of the Construction Fundamentals Program, was once unemployed and struggling to find direction. After joining NRTI, he not only learned valuable skills but also gained a sense of purpose by helping build homes for others in need. Today, Kevin works full-time in the construction industry and volunteers his time mentoring new students.
“Building the tiny homes gave me more than a job—it gave me pride and a way to give back to my community.”
